Getaway to Santa Cruz Part 3: All the Foods

One of the best parts of any trip is all the foods and restaurants you get to experience and enjoy! So I have compiled a list of all the places we went to and pictures of all the deliciousness!

I think it’s important to eat at places that are strictly local, you can only get that food and restaurant experience in that one spot.

So Sean’s been here before, and recommended we go here. It’s 100% vegetarian with some vegan options as well! I wasn’t too sure about getting a veggie burger (worried I wouldn’t like it and put it to waste) but Sean got one (the California Burger to be exact)! I stuck with the classic grilled cheese. The restaurant was started back in 1979, and the atmosphere is comforting and very 1970’s diner style.

The grilled cheese is made up of jack cheese and cheddar cheese on thick sour dough bread. With a side of fries, it sounds simple, but it was delicious!

The most refreshing part of this meal was the House-Made Organic Lemonade, it even came with a paper straw!

The Penny Ice Creamery

Known as the only place in Santa Cruz that makes all of their ice cream from scratch. That’s impressive, and something I think most other places should adopt. They also get all of their ingredients from local farms and orchards. And! Every paper product they use, in store and for take-out are 100% recyclable and biocompostable. Each step towards a better planet is always a plus for me!

As product go, as you can see I can ice cream in a waffle cone, so delicious! I got cookies & cream, but they have plenty of great flavors, and change them throughout the seasons.

Cruise Coffee Company

We stopped here for coffee before heading off to Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park. It’s such an adorable little spot! It’s drive-thru and walk-up only. And a small seating area in front. I was expecting them to be more basic, brewed coffee and that’s it… But it took me by surprise! You can get almost any type of coffee you desire. The woman working there was so kind too!

I usually go for sweeter coffees, my drink from Starbucks is a Cinnamon Dolce Latte. But obviously they don’t have those here. So I settled on a Caramel Latte, and IT WAS DELICIOUS!

Kianti’s Pizza & Pasta Bar

I’ve been the last time me and my sister were in Santa Cruz, so I knew me and Sean had to come here! It’s just so good!

To start off I got a drink (non alcoholic). Raspberry Lemonade. I was a little confused when I saw the rim…most rims consist of salt. Luckily it was sugar! And I found out why, it’s a super tart lemonade, but that rim of sugar definitely balances it out.

For starters we got the Garlic Cheese Bread. It was basic, bread with cheese on top, obviously. But sometimes I think simple flavors before the entree can be a good way to begin. It came on the cutest little wood board!

Obviously you can’t come to a restaurant known for pizza and NOT get pizza. So that’s exactly what we did. We got a 10″ Pepperoni Pizza. I was on the spicier side, something I’m typically use to with pizza, but it was still delicious.

The best part was the crust….but I’m a sucker for a good crust on any pizza.

The finale dinner…

Sean wanted to take me to a fancy dinner for my birthday. And trust me….this place is fancy, and pricey. But I think it’s worth it. If you’re going to indulge and want a great experience, this is the place. Not to mention even the outside is beautiful. It even has an elevator to take you down to the restaurant! We were impatient, and decided to take the stairs when we got there. I’m glad we did, it was a pretty view down.

We started off with some drinks, Sean got Red Wine and I got a Berry Lemon Drop. It was the most delicious lemon drop I’ve had in a long time, if I could, I would’ve drank an entire bucket of it! haha…

I think the coolest part so far was where we were seated. They are different levels, and a lot of stairs…..But we ended up in the wine cellar dining area. It was literally where they store all of their wines, so cool!

We decided to try something new for our appetizer.

Fried Calamari and it came with 3 different dipping sauces: Thai Chili, Tartar & Cocktail. It was a little chewy, which I think is a common thing for fried calamari. And the cocktail sauce was probably my favorite. Sean preferred it without the sauces.

The main course I chose was the Campanelle E Frutta Del Mare. That dish is made up of: Poached scallops, prawns, and whitefish in shellfish sauce with tomato, cream, brandy, over citrus-infused Campanelle pasta with fresh herbs and charred lemon, served with garlic bread. (This is taken straight from the menu).

Sean’s main course he chose was the Chateau Prime Sirloin. Char-grilled, sauteed mushrooms and asparagus, garlic-whipped potato with your choice of Chimichurri or Beurre Rouge sauces. Minus the mushrooms and sauce.

Onto dessert!

Tiramisu. There are so many ways that this dessert can go wrong, too soggy from the coffee, the lady fingers are too crunchy or too soft. But this tiramisu was perfect. And no I’m not just saying that for the sake of the review. I’m saying it because it’s true, and we ate it all.
